Destination: Mpika Province in Zambia

I promised to tell you something special in Mpika, a town located in Muchinga Province which lies at the junction of the Great North Road to Kasama and Mbala and the Tanzam Highway to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Edible Caterpillars….Yes…Yummy Yum 😋.

These delicacies are a good source of income for locals here and they attract visitors from all over.

They are gathered later in the year when they have crawled into trees to eat the leaves and build cocoons. We were told that the green and black hairless ones are brought home in buckets and baskets. There they are degutted by hand and dried in the sun.

These edible caterpillars are normally picked by hand from the bush. Each caterpillar is pinched at the tail end to rupture the inner contents. The picker then squeezes it like a tube of toothpaste to expel the slimy, green contents of the gut. The caterpillar is then ready for sun drying. Yum!

So, as I was standing by the Land Rover stretching my legs, a lady carrying a basket of caterpillars walks to me …”Customer, Caterpillar, Caterpillar….Fresh, this one is fresh. You just take and fry. It is ready to eat, customer. It’s very nice…”
Me: “Oh, am sure it is, let me have some tea and I come for the caterpillar 😂😂🏃.”
